Chapter 9

Sabrina was horrified. She buried her face in her hands. “What have I done? I am in so much trouble. I broke the baby!”

She opened her hands and looked back at the crib. The baby in a man's body was still there. “Bah-bah,” Rudy demanded.

“We have to undo this,” Sabrina said in a panic. She waved her arms like a pitcher winding up and threw a point at Rudy. “Okay. Presto chango, go back to normal.”

“Bah-bah.”

She pointed again. “Go back to normal!”

“Bah-bah!”

“Oohhgh!” Sabrina battered her fists against the air. “That's not even close!”

Rudy's face scrunched up and grew very red. His mouth opened as he warmed up for a full-throated bawl. Sabrina grabbed up his bottle and thrust it into his mouth. “Okay, here's your bah-bah!”

The tension vanished out of Rudy's body. He began drinking from the bottle and smiling happily again. Sabrina was filled with despair. “This is so creepy,” she moaned. “We've got to get help.”

“Bankie?” offered Rudy, pulling up the comer of his coverlet.

Sabrina blanched and quickly snugged the blanket back around the child-man. “You'd better keep your bankie until we get you dressed. And I don't think anything with ducks or balloons is going to work.”

Heavy footsteps on the stairs warned Sabrina of Harvey's approach. “Hey, Sabrina, you need some help?” he hollered.

Sabrina almost collided with him in her haste to keep him from coming all the way upstairs. “Nope, everything's fine. Why don't you go watch the game?”

Harvey leaned on the banister rail and jerked a lazy thumb at the TV. “It's one strike from the end. Unless this guy knocks one out, it's over.”

“It can't be over!” exclaimed Sabrina. She pointed at the TV, making Harvey turn. “Hey, look—”

As soon as Harvey's eyes had left her, Sabrina pumped her fist in the air twice and pointed a spell at the players on the TV. Harvey's eyes widened at the crack of a bat. The announcer went wild. “It's a home run!” he shouted. “Out of the park! The first of his career! Folks, we're going into extra innings!”

“Unbelievable!” Harvey muttered, stumbling downstairs to take up his seat on the couch again.

Sabrina raced back upstairs to the Gersons' bedroom to look in Jerry Gerson's closet for some suitable clothes. Trailing a loaded hanger, she ran into the nursery.

In not-so-short order, she had Rudy dressed in a shirt, pants, and a jacket. “You could help a little,” she complained as she struggled to get his arm through the jacket sleeve.

When his hand appeared at the end of the sleeve, Rudy kept it going to grab for Sabrina's face. “Nose,” he cackled.

“Oww!” she yowled, pulling quickly away. “That's not helping. Stay still. There. Hey, you look pretty cute. Just don't spit up on your dad's suit, okay?” Sabrina stood up and stretched, trying to relax and maintain control of the situation.

Rudy sat on the floor, his hands raised toward Sabrina. “Up?”

“You've gotta be kidding me,” she said.

Just then the phone rang. Sabrina patted Rudy on the head, hoping he would stay, like a dog.
